"We've got this new technology! It can make all kind of stuff as long as you don't mind that it's all kinda vapid and dumb. Oh and also using it a lot will make you kinda vapid and dumb too."
Trans equality has always been politically inconvenient and that's why we're never going to just play ball.
There'll never be a time when it's expedient to stand up for us. We're unpopular, a bit insular, and there aren't many of us. We'll always provoke conspiratorial mythmaking.
We have to rely on allies with moral clarity. Liberal exasperation about our inability to shut up right now is just pissing in the wind. We didn't stop before you noticed our existence and we aren't stopping now.
So proud of the team at Indiana Conservation Voters and our partners. Plus the lawmakers and electeds who showed up to support common sense opposition to Trump's attempt to cheat in Indiana's mid-term election.
My clients trust #CreativePoliticalStrategy to deliver effective large events on a tight turnaround. It's important to react quickly to changing conditions: and that takes experience and good relationships within the advocacy community -- which is what I bring to the table.
The human cost of their gestapo tactics should be bad enough for all of us, but ICE is also impoverishing everyone by robbing our community of a kind of cultural wealth that you can't put a price tag on.
The things you know or believe? At a large enough scale that's just cosmic randomness, friend. You happened to exist in circumstances that allowed you to be able to learn a lesson.
Call me a nihilist (many have) but It doesn't make sense to feel superior to anyone over that.
It's something I remind myself of often, but also something I think a *lotta* other opinionated folk need to remember too.
It's the root cause of so much over-the-top moralizing.
Doubt that it's possible? It's already exactly this easy:
OFFICER: Stop, you are under arrest for being an illegal immigrant. YOU: But officer, I'm a citizen. Here's my driver's license. OFFICER: I think that looks fake. You are an illegal. Get in the van. YOU: But this van says "Alligator Alcatraz" on the side and don't I have a right to see a lawyer?? OFFICER: [Fingers taser] Nope. I say you're an illegal. Get in the van.
Due process is the legal framework that is supposed to protect us from being snatched off the street.
It can mean a lot of things, but generally its supposed to be a process for determining if someone can be arrested, and to offer them an opportunity to mount a defense.
If they are allowed to make one exception, it all crumbles - they can just grab you on the thinnest of excuses. Wrong race, wrong language, wrong neighborhood. Or because an officer doesn't like the way you looked at them...
Now that due process is gone for undocumented immigrants, it is functionally gone for everyone. At this point, the only thing holding it together for anyone is the social norm.
The administration is already trial-ballooning arrests of citizens to see how the public responds. If the people accept it well enough, they'll keep doing it. The number of people who we "can't afford" to give due process rights too will steadily increase to include anyone inconvenient.
I wired my home for LAN some time ago, and the whole thing is driven by a big old 24pt 3com gigabit switch that I got off eBay for something $30. I opened it up and pulled the old loud fans out of it since my wiring space is in our rumpus room. It's never had a temperature problem and it's just chugging along passing bits around the house like a champ.
Individual self-sufficiency is a capitalist myth. Everything about our individual lives is made possible by the work of many hands. This has been true for as long as there have been people.
I think what upsets me most about Epstein is that thousands of innocent kids are being openly harmed/killed by the president and you don't actually need a conspiracy theory or any secret files to see it and none of these people give a shit about it because so many of the victims aren't white.
After decades of allowing us to update our IDs, and with no evidence of a problem, the BMV is considering new rules that would BAN #trans Hoosiers from updating our ID.
Without updated ID, we're forced to OUT ourselves during countless routine interactions with bank tellers, store clerks, etc. In our modern environment of VIRULANT anti-trans rhetoric -- that's incredibly dangerous.
Trump won Texas by only 56% of the vote in 2024. That's an awful lot of collateral damage for all you "they deserve what they voted for" types. Nearly 44% of the state actually didn't vote for this mess.
