@minervas_uggla
@evan Well-reasoned thread and good points I hadn't. I'm curious what data you have for this last assumption. Two data points indicate the opposite for me. One, that people all over the world cook less at home, ie. buy out more. Second, when it comes to food, we're animals of habit more than anything. Cooking a recipe at home makes it more likely that you'll eat that dish again in the future. Since we're cooking less and less at home, you're likely to eat that dish out.
@evan Yes. And I have to buts. First but is that citizens should probably consider paying taxes to some other entity. Reviving the good old progressive party membership fee, where you give some of your income to a revolutionary party that also organizes for social needs, could be an idea. The other but is that I don't want my yes to imply that taxes are some kind of exchange with the government (I give you taxes, you give me services), because that undermines other values.
@evan I chose their actions. This one was difficult for me. I like the idea that all of the above are relevant when we evaluate each other. But only choosing one of them, I would say actions are more important. And the other criteria, I actually use to get a sense of how they will act.
Today I learned that there's an oil spill off the US coast that has been going on since 2004 and, somehow, in the system of capitalism, no one has been able to get things done and fucking close the spill. The reserves are great enough for it to continue for at least a 100 years more. It is still going on, spilling up to a 100 barrels of oil into the ocean every day. The market economy is a fucking joke. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taylor_Energy_oil_spill
@badrihippo Since I'm still being mentioned in this thread, I'll chip in and say that treating symptoms is vastly underrated among radicals in my experience :D Almost by definition, the trap of focusing solely on "root causes" is you can miss the obvious stuff to deal with right in front of you, like those actual billionaries - assholes that have a name and an address. E.g. going after Bezoz at his wedding in Venice can have structural effects too @notclacke@ted@evan@ghostdancer@screwturn
Another simple answer that often doesn't get aired: "Why are so many countries around the world just ignoring what is happening in Gaza?" - "Because of racism. That's the simple answer, I would say."
The inspiring thing with Thunberg is actually her use of anger. She doesn't "act it out" in sudden outburst of aggression without thinking her actions through. She remains cool, calm and collected, but it doesn't take away the focus and intensity of her righteous anger. Quite the opposite. If anything, she's a woman on a mission. And she's using her anger psychologically in the most appropriate way possible.
I say this because most adults can learn a thing or two about the way she uses anger to shove away the bullshit and see reality more clearly. There's so much noise interfering with the simple fact that Israel is committing a genocide, that European states are supporting Israel to do it and that our media continue to make that possible by parroting Israeli press releases https://theintercept.com/2025/05/25/how-to-write-about-palestine
Greta Thunberg continues to be one of the most mature voices in mainstream media. After having arrived in Paris, a journalist asks her what she has to say about the American tyrant's comment that "She's an angry woman that needs anger management". Thunberg's answer is short and sweet: "Well, I think the world needs a lot more angry women, especially with everything going on right now."
