Like look, I'm an anarchist so I'm no fan of government in general, but public utilities, including internet, absolutely should be collectively owned, controlled, and maintained by the communities that use them, not corporations somewhere else, so this is cool anyway.

In particular, I've really disliked the "Never Again" slogan for many decades now. It seems clear to me that people living in nation-states really like committing genocide and that nothing in the international system that we've set up really restrains people from genocide. There's something extra horrible about a "never again" slogan that is broken again and again.

The US bears special responsibility for ending whatever rhetorical commitment there was against genocide because we so obviously support death squads, official torture, deadly borders, forced relocation, concentration camps, and other adjuncts or preliminaries to full genocide and because the US was a primary author of the post WW II settlement that really made a commitment against it.

It's the difference between people that misgender you and get all *sorry* and start begging your forgiveness and wailing about how terrible of a person they are, because their support for you is all about their guilt and their feelings, and people who just correct themselves and move on and get better over time, because it's about justice and compassion.

You can usually suss out the latter in how they treat marginalized people. Guilt totems you're constantly trying to suck up to make *yourself* feel better about your privilege or guilt, or full equal human beings who you want to help dismantle the structures that oppress them, because you care about justice and have compassion for them? People acting out of guilt don't think about the mechanics of justice and the particular context of situations, they just unthinkingly side with whoever they feel most guilty towards because it's still *all about them* because it's *all about assuaging their feelings of guilt*, not actual justice or compassion.

There are two types of leftists. Those that operating on strong conceptions of justice and compassion, and those who are motivated based on guilt and optics. (The latter type isn't unique to leftists though). I try to be the former.

@Tupp_ed @mathowie we have this whole thing where we think it's important to identify the good parts of early microcomputing culture, the stuff that's worth carrying forward into the future, and then protect that. fundamentally what we want is for computers to continue to be tools to expand the human potential for discovery and creation, by staying explorative. tools for self-expression are part of that...

it's hardly self-expression when a company's algorithm decides what you want to say?

If you're on Mastodon.art or tech.lgbt, one day this week you're going to wake up and you may well find yourself missing dozens upon dozens of people off your feed.

This is not because those people are bad people, or even because the instances they're on are bad instances with a long history of abuse. Neither instance is full of bad people, nor are they abusive in any material way.

This is because one person controlling one huge instance got red-hot with anger over a single situation and kept escalating it, using her platform and position to amplify her own anger. She long ago gave up trying to de-escalate, and now every post she sees just makes her angrier, but because of the way Mastodon works, she is single-handedly capable of severing countless thousands of interpersonal connections.

For my money, if this makes you fucking angry then it damn well should, but NOT at tech.lgbt. We're lucky they're even keeping the damn server running after all this.

I've been following this really closely, so let me spell out some assertions I hold to be true here.

NO, the post by the .lgbt mod was neither the first nor the most popular post calling out TheBadSpace. NO, the criticisms of the list were not rooted in, or in any way informed by, the race of the maintainer (Ro).

YES, shitty people capitalized on the drama to harass Ro, but NO person on .lgbt's staff condoned, encouraged, prompted, or supported this at any point.

NO, .lgbt is not "as bad as KiwiFarms"; such a comparison is abhorrent, given the very real lives destroyed by KF. Nobody who makes a claim like this should be taken seriously.

NO, folks are not "spreading lies" when suggesting that Ro's fediblock posts influence the contents of his own blocklist. Many of his "trusted" sources follow him closely and block on his command, and he revels in the indirect authority this gives him and the pain this causes anyone critical of him.

A reactionary billionaire says "academia bad" amid some word vomit defensively trying to puff up the techie bloggosphere as a philosophical movement, and now we've got to slog through even more tedious legions of only marginally more aware left-liberal academics preening about how they're political radicals and sneering at them is objectively fascism.

Could we consider on the #Fediverse and #Mastodon that some Meta or non Meta Editors review federating requests before new instances make harm?
I know that would mean a federated "line of conduct", like in any real world federation...

Your agency, sir or other, is to move on if your instance's rules and defederations don't suit you.

How much luckier are you here, than on the other sites, where what they decide just goes and that's it, with no options whatsoever.

But if you're not contributing to the operation of the instance, and that instance is not selling your attention, why should the operator consider you at all?

Masto.art's "curator", WelshPixie, is now flying off the handle yet again, feeling even more justified in severing connections with this entire server.

Why? It's simple: she's only ever done this kind of tactic against smaller instances that are largely progressive/leftist, and historically, because she's in charge of such a large instance relative to them, they've been understandably hurt and have bent over backwards to placate her. (Notably, she doesn't enforce these same standards against larger instances than hers, like .social, because there's too much money in it.)

This time, though, the instance bent over backwards for her, and it only made her angrier. She didn't want understanding or reconciliation, she wanted to force another instance to fire its staffers and was willing to use her whole instance as a cudgel to carry that out.

So now, folks are done with her shit, and I am VERY here for it.
