@cstross @arstechnica the FDA was previously the standard for testing and regulatory approval of medicines with many smaller nations pretty much just defeating to them rather than go through the expense of repeating their work this is likely coming to an end

@pluralistic @Gargron Who would be willing to bet that they hired a lawyer that specialises in stuff like drafting TOS for online services and they just went with what the lawyer recommended. With the lawyer probably having all kinds of convincing arguments about how this was "industry standard" and why the terms were necessary if they wanted the project and/or the not for profit to not be sued.

@cstross @quinn @ianb starving to death surrounded by plenty pretty much sounds like the general end state of capitalism in absence of constraint

@cstross @quinn @ianb actually capitalism in the absence of constraint basically always devolves into feudalism because in the absence of an existing government one will eventually form even if it refuses to call itself one

I just listened to the first hour of the audiobook of Picks & Shovels by Cory Doctorow ( @pluralistic ) and I almost wish I hadn't because I won't get to find out what happens next till February and I'll be dying from the anticipation till then.
I highly recommend backing his Kickstarter like I have if you want to get the ebook/audiobook when it comes out.

@pluralistic The first hour of the audiobook is available on Cory's podcast Craphound available on most podcast apps by searching for "Craphound" or as RSS feed at https://craphound.com/feed
Be warned you should only listen if you can handle waiting till February the 15th for the next chapter

@pluralistic that's an average of 37ish dollars per backer which makes sense considering the eBook plus audiobook bundle costs $35 which is what I assume most people would go for

@cstross @Gieljan out of curiosity what was your original solution to Case nightmare Green (it would be funny if it was something like a global plague wiping out enough of the population to decrease the strain on the walls of reality)

@cstross @Gieljan Only you can save consensus reality remember turning your brain down a mere 20 to 30 IQ points for a month each year Can help reduce your thalamic footprint by up to 500 thalms per year (pay no attention to the high-end GPU cluster your bank is using for high frequency trading that's essential industry we all must make sacrifices so essential industry can continue)...
