@cstross interesting thread - as an author how do you feel about the pressure to provide a good ending? The Merchant Princes ending was astonishing; with the Laundry Files you've kind of skipped the ending and moved on.

@webmink @carlmalamud I agree law and standards should be open, but I don't see the logic that it should be free to comply. Compliance with the law typically involves plenty of expenses (equipment, tools, materials, time); what distinguishes patents from these? We need to clarify this otherwise the argument doesn't work.

Intriguing typography fail here - pfffffffft rendering with 4 successive ff ligatures and consequently looking very uneven. Self-published (Unsong, p99) so not surprising. But what's supposed to happen here? I doubt there's an ffffffff ligature in the font! #typography
