But being a software professional is so divorced from that experience of creation, it's hard to remember why I ever touched a keyboard sometimes.

@mattly I don't know how exactly you got jbri tech. But I think the first steps most of us took into tech isn't just a detour. I think it's consistent with being a person who makes things. Outside the tech industry writing a piece of software to do something feels like it's mostly a creative endeavour not that wildly different from making music or writing a story.

@mattly the other option, which also might be a self limiting behaviour is my willingness to try lots of things twice or thrice and never really care about being good at them.

Maybe I should care more about being good at things I do and I'm self limiting on a different axis.

Self limiting is an interesting phrase here. I think it gets to the heart of what I'm trying to say.

You have some great points about anxiety and other related issues that make the question more complicated than I originally posed it.

But I think what I'm trying to get at is:

Is not engaging in something because you perceive yourself to be "bad at it" fundamentally self limiting?

@mattly right that is sort of what I'm talking about.

I should clarify I'm not trying to say that a person should do something that they really dislike. Like forcing you to try singing.

My thought is more what if you liked singing or are unsure but aren't very good at it?

@mattly trivia night is a bad example there as pure recreation, if you don't enjoy it don't do it. Skill doesn't matter.

But if I say, practiced sewing and got good, then I might need to spend more time fixing my own pants instead of paying a tailor.

@mattly not to discount any of that, but I should clarify, she loves trivia now. After 2 or 3 times trying it she's more annoyed than me when we miss a week now, and will even go without me. It was just the first example that's not work related I could think of.

But you make a good point in general. I'm bad at X so I don't want to do it, isn't necessarily a direct statement about skill at X and that warrants some thought.

@mattly aside from the little self deprecating joke I mostly meant this in a non-work context.

For example, it took me months to convince my wife to come try trivia night at our local pub. She was very resistant because "she's not good at trivia" (which I disagree with, but how I feel about her trivia ability isn't a salient point).

You make an interesting point about intentionally avoiding skills to align with satisfaction though. Certainly in work, but maybe even in non-work.

I've noticed some people (I don't know if it's a majority or a minority) that really dislike doing anything they aren't good at.

Aside from my main job (which I'm arguably not very good at either), I don't really concern myself with whether or not I'm good at things.

If you do something once, you probably won't be good at it. How are you supposed to get good if you don't practice?

On the other hand, maybe I don't get good at things, even though I try, because I don't care?

@mattly this is a question. The answer, to my knowledge, is no. But we bloody well should.

Stop worrying about the rise of the evil AIs. It's science fiction and it ain't happening in your lifetime.

But "AI" is dangerous if we let the scammers run their tricks with it. Same assholes who told you to buy a Bored Ape is trying to sell you this book.

@mattly oh I misread. I thought you were stuck in a boot loop where it keeps trying to enter recovery mode to diagnose why it can't boot into recovery mode.

@mattly I mean, I wouldn't actually install Linux on it. But if windows won't boot, you could use a Linux usb key to wipe the drive.

Hi! Not sure who needs to hear this today, but HR is there to protect the company from you.

If you want protection from the company, you need a union rep!

HR people aren't necessarily evil, they probably even provide some useful services to employees, but don't forget who's interests they are there for.
