    > Imagine an alternate 2025 where Kamala Harris won the presidency. Would Meta be hiring conservative pundits and scaling back content moderation? Of course not.

It's worth noting that (a) all of this is happening under a biden presidency and (b) the gop have been threatening meta for years about this

in fact, they'd probably do stuff like this under kamala to demonstrate their "impartiality"

@mcc i mean, much like stadia, google products are considered successful if they hamper adoption for their competitors

@glyph @mcc when something is impossible it usually means "we would have to rip 90% of our engine code out and try again" or "we can't do that in a portable way" because if they give gamers even a fraction of an inch, they'll never cease whining

@glyph @mcc you need to remember, statements by gamedevs are not to other programmers

they're to gamers, who don't understand how computers work, how software is built, or that corporations have priorities beyond fps

@glyph @mcc if you are not a gamedev then it's easy to forget how *exploratory* gamecode is

i remember when celeste's state machine got published and people were pouting and huffing, despite it being a well defined state machine and not 1800 if statements in different parts of the codebase

impossible means "as much work as starting over" most of the time

      Movement Systems Drum Computer
The Movement Drum System I/II (generally referred to as the Movement MCS Percussion Computer) is a British-made drum machine produced approximately between 1981 (MKI) and 1983 (MKII). Around 10 MKI were built and 50 MKII. The Movement was exceptionally futuristic for its time. The Movement was used by Dave Stewart of Eurythmics on "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" History Both retailed at £1999 ex vat at March 1983 from 'Movement Audio Visual', 61 Taunton Road, Bridgwater, Somerset, TA6 3LP, UK. Both models combined two technologies; analogue synthesized drum sounds similar to Simmons SDS-V and basic digital 8-bit drum samples. In total 14 independent voice modules could be played (5 of which can be digital). Also notable for its computer-like design and its ability to display drum notes and sequencing graphically on a green black cathode ray tube display unit perhaps similar to page R on the Fairlight CMI. The Movement Drum Systems are known to have been expensive upon release, and it is estimated that approximately thirty were made. The original designers were John Dickenson (owned the...

caught up with the last season of lower decks, just in time for the finale

i did not think a trek comedy show would be this funny or well written, or hands down the best star trek i've seen since ds9

it really is a love note to star trek, including all the weird canon and lore, that takes itself just seriously enough to work and no more

tbh if you want to be surrounded by nerds interested in breaking things without being interested in breaking people, you get into speedrunning and not infosec

@glyph total aside but programmers think "version numbers will fix this" despite twenty years of the user agent string proving otherwise

it's easy to propose a solution if you only understand 10% of the problem

@lzg i.e welcome to the tolerant left, we've got [checks notes] capitalists who think it's ok to be gay but school meal debts are fine, neoliberals who think racism needs to be means tested, and new york times readers who've been patiently waiting to cheer on a war crime

you can also say "no-one owns or controls soccer" too, which is also true in the sense that people can kick a ball around

but not in the sense that you can turn up to the world cup and expect to be let on the pitch

if google decide they do not want email from you, it's bad news trying to send email

also bad news: that ip address you just got used to be spam, here's a fursuit, it's your best way to find a spam list admin

software engineering methodologies are simple, there's really only two goals

the first goal of a methodology is to make workers replaceable, and this is usually achieved by removing any worker agency in the project

the second goal of a methodology is to insulate decision makers from risk and this is usually achieved by blaming the workers for failure—for not hitting estimates forced upon them

unfortunately, "delivering software people want" doesn't make the cut

even before you open up the book labelled "the guy has really skeevy opinions and doesn't know how to keep his mouth shut"

or the large overflowing binder of "people who have left free software because of his behaviour"

there's a quick summary note that says "other free software organizations have broken ties with the fsf because of him"

for someone who kicked up a fuss over sudo it is kinda tragic they're clawing onto power over others despite the consequences
