@soatok Completely mundane things like this being well encrypted makes it more difficult for bad actors to distinguish between it & communications by someone they want to attack!

@soatok I tried out PGP (using GPG) for a little while. It is so terrible & unpleasant to use, & the cryptography used is absolutely ancient. The usage cycle is convoluted & confusing.

I'm sure it could be decent to use with a nice UI, but it could never feel secure. You're always going to have to downgrade your security for certain people with it too. It feels like something LockPickingLawyer would open in a few seconds after learning cryptography once he exhausts all physical locks.

@silver_huskey The issues with Telegram are:

• owned & run by neonazis
• years old unpatched vulnerabilities in app
• refusal to fix unsafe & ineffective cryptography, which is off by default anyway & very hidden
• advertises their app as super ultra mega secure, but it has more holes than a fishnet
• shares user data with police too freely, including for things like people being gay in countries where it's illegal to be gay
• dumped 26GiB. of my nudes, tax documents, & other files into a groupchat completely on its own for no fucking reason before I was able to turn on airplane mode, kill the app's processes, & get a group moderator to delete everything
• anti LGBT
• requires phone number
• nazi dogwhistles in their blog posts
• premium lets you ignore other users' privacy settings
• crashes if someone sends a GIF

The only issue Telegram doesn't have yet is requiring you scan your face & government ID for them. Matrix is almost worth dealing with, assuming it's somehow your only other option.

@silver_huskey @PepperTheVixen First time setup for a new client is more complicated than logging in to an email server if you're using encryption, since Matrix has no automatic key management & you have to load them yourself, but that's all. If you know what a key is it's fine. Matrix with e2ee is pretty unreliable when someone's server is slow though & I wouldn't recommend it if you're looking for something end to end encrypted. If you just need a groupchat & you're not sharing sensitive information that would require encryption, it's decent.

@silver_huskey Isn't Telegram much worse than Discord even after the stuff they're starting next month though? Switching to Telegram is probably not a good idea.

@SuperDicq I know Debian Unstable isn't actually very unstable, but it's called unstable for a reason. It's the development version. Ideally this would be something a stereotypical grandma could use. Thank you though!

Is there a Debian based Linux distro that isn't super old & outdated (Debian) & isn't straight up Ubuntu (so many of them) & isn't a tech demo (KDE Neon) & isn't "anti-woke" (Mint)? I'm looking for something I can give to someone that might want to try Linux for the first time that has sane defaults & won't require much fiddling until they want to make their own big changes, so I want to avoid Arch based stuff.
