There should be job roles for burnt out Staff+ engineers to hang back, burn down the bug list, write tests, fix documentation, clean up alerts, and other assorted housekeeping. Stuff that’s impactful and soothing to engineers who’ve lost the motivation to lead from the front but still find satisfaction in those sorts of tasks.
Have you ever hired an artist/illustrator for your personal website? Thinking about it, but have no experience doing so and wonder if there’s any good tips for finding and working with freelancers for this sort of work.
Are there any consumer routers that have good support for debugging connectivity/throughput issues? Sitting here watching some browser tabs spin, wondering: “is it my wireless, my ISP, the site that I’m connected to, or something else?” and wishing the router could at least confirm/deny some of those possibilities with a simple status page.
I’m still on my aging, pre-acquisition Eero’s. I don’t mind a reasonable bit of home sysadmin work if there’s a good hardware + open software option.
