@emilygorcenski It’s definitely not - the bug caused the binaries to bypass the CDN that was in place. The person I was talking to assumed that the files were being served directly from the bucket by design.

Spent today looking into a bug that caused large files to be served directly from an S3 bucket, and not from a CDN, which turned out to be a straightforward but costly bug.

Was chastised by a principal dev in a public channel that this “design decision” is an “architecture anti-pattern”, and when advised that I maintain the codebase part-time, he responded “well unfortunately that codebase is now owned by your team”.

Sorry I broke your stuff dude, I was thinking about my dying Mum at the time.

@goatsarah Yep, it’s tucked under the wing, just out of shot. Amazing to think that, as big as the engines are, they’re not even generating half the total thrust at Mach 3.

@blongden Theoden / Rohan’s story arc has been unexpectedly moving for me in the years since I first watched the trilogy. It’s such an important lesson about picking yourself up from unimaginable tragedy.

@goatsarah @alastair Yeah, it’s not as difficult as it sounds to spin it around when you’re above the dense atmosphere, but part of me would love to see 1970s technology, with a human being at the controls, slam it into reverse.

@alastair @goatsarah One of my favourite facts about the Shuttle is the Return to Launch Site abort mode. Literally “spin ‘er around and blast back to base”.

The Shuttle would spin around, with the external tank still attached, and execute a burn until it has nullified its down range velocity and can start to head back to Kennedy Space Center. It would then jettison the ET and try to land.
