So, fedi, how do I pick monitors?

I want to spec out a new home office workspace. I want three monitors, probably larger than 24” each. I am somewhat visually impaired, inasmuch as I have myopia, astigmatism and encroaching presbyopia, and have just been operated for strabismus. I have glasses for this, but I do need to keep my screens at a reasonably consistent distance from my face.

I’m not a gamer, so I don’t need the ultra-high-framerate screens, and I’m not in professional media either, so super-faithful colour reproduction is not a huge concern. I would appreciate high contrast ratio, and good tolerance for a pretty well-lit office with lots of natural light. I mostly do office work and programming.

I’m not looking for specific monitor recommendations, rather resources that tell me what to look for and how to evaluate the relevant specs.

I am not averse to spending some money on decent quality monitors, I am going to spend hours a day at it.

Having recently resuscitated my old Haskell notes from university, I remember remarking at the time that it was an incredibly easy to read language that was quite difficult to write properly.

Given the new age of LLM-generated code, something that I feel is definitely here to stay however much we hate the idea, maybe optimising for readability might be something to keep in mind, and changing to languages that are better for that could be a step in an interesting direction.

Just tried to welcome a non-binary friend of mine to France in French. Except I had no idea how to end the first word, which is gendered.

One trans wiki rabbit hole later and: bloody hell non-binary really really breaks the French language down all sorts of seams, and not in a nice way at all. And the language is very much resisting it… I mean, I’ve only looked at the written form, I’ve no idea how I’d even go about speaking this stuff in day to day conversation.

I’m not complaining about the way they’ve added a third gender in Spanish any more. That’s at least mostly in keeping with the current grammatical structure than this trash fire of a (lack of) compromise. I suspect it’s going to take a hard decree from l’académie with all the concomitant politics before something sensible arises.

(For those of you wondering why your feed is flooded with Spanish-language memes that involve Sam and Frodo: there’s been a long-standing meme where Sam says “wait for me, Mr. Frodo” and subtitled “Sam va lentín” which means “Sam goes a bit slowly”, but is similar-sounding to “San Valentín”, the Spanish for Saint Valentine. Shitposts and memes have evolved since then)

After decades of dealing with curls, and keeping my hair short as a result of it, I now, unexpectedly, have straight hair.

It’s a very pleasant side effect of the bleaching process that was part of colouring my hair. I didn’t know about it going in, but I was pleasantly surprised. I did know I would have to care for it more, and I use plenty of conditioner to keep it supple, but the feel is amazing.

The sheer joy I have when combing my hair and having it stay put, or of it falling in ways that make it flop rather than floof is amazing. It’s a small thing, but it adds good vibes to my morning routine.

So if you have curly hair and are tired of the frizz and the curls getting everywhere, consider dyeing it.

Yesterday I had a wonderfully gleeful drive back from the conference by introducing a Gen Z cab driver who invited me to play my own music in his car to the Jeff Wayne version of War of the Worlds.

From the "wait, it's not the soundtrack to the film", to the awe when Teófilo Martinez started the initial speech - "I know that voice from somewhere, like, old-time movies...", to the expletive I got when the strings started playing, to the amazement that this was 1970s music...

It's the little things...
