My office is a partnership between two lawyers with wildly diverging political views. It works for us. It helps us serve a wider demographic, and helps us view a wide variety of issues from a wide political lens.

We get into some pretty wild discussions, with staff being split fairly evenly politically as well. We were having one today at lunch. It concerned the physiological changes that occur in the brain and body under intense stress and/or trauma.

As example, the conversation led to an incident about a year ago when a police chief, on a camping trip, shot and killed a man who had shot at him first during an altercation over a camping spot.

My partner was telling the story when one of our paralegals asked, “why didn’t he shoot him in the knee or something“? To which my partner, who is also a concealed carry instructor, replied “because it’s a good way to get dead. While you’re aiming, they are shooting. You pick the largest point (chest) and tap tap. Two rounds and take cover.”

This is when I became involved in the discussion, and brought my trauma training to bear.

I said:
“The science is developing fast around what happens to our brains in situations like that. All it’s telling our body to do is survive. Our frontal lobes just stop working. Our vision narrows. Our bodies go numb from the rush of blood out of our extremities, and to our vital organs.”

I went on, and this is where the story gets interesting.

I said “For example, you’ve seen the #AcornCop video, right?”

Conservatives: Crickets.
Leftists: Nodding heads.

To which I said, “I guess #FoxNews has a policy of never showing cops in a negative light, huh?”

I’m a 50+ white male.

How many old white guys out there would be willing join a 501(c)(3) whose mission is to oppose old white guys in positions of power? How many people would be willing to provide financial support for the same?

Nothing like this currently exists in the U.S. and I think it could be a damn effective form of protest. Personally, I’m sick and tired of seeing old fucking white guys in power everywhere I turn. Am I an aberration?

Oh, and despite thinking of myself as a bit of wordsmith, I’m admittedly terrible at acronym generation. What’s a good name for an organization pursuing said mission?

The social contract in an "adversarial" political system divides the world along two lines --- winners, and losers.

You don't get to choose whether to endlessly struggle and compete against your brothers and sisters in adversity. You only get to choose how hard you'll struggle to make their lives shittier than yours.

The U.S. isn't a democracy. It isn't a republic. It's an adversarial system based on the flawed social darwinian concept that when we are forced to compete society improves. Sounds like our founding fathers had watched too much Beyond Thunderdome.

A little whiny lawyer thread:

Just wrapped a 5 day civil jury trial. Mentally and emotionally wiped ... but my brain is still running on adrenaline and keeps asking this question:

Why in the hell do courts act out the performative bullshit of swearing people in?

You know, the whole "raise your right hand and swear an oath to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth under penalty of perjury in the state of hocus pocus"?

People just tell lies, whole lies, and nothing but lies. Swear to god, I impeached three different opposing party witnesses ten ways to Sunday over the course of the week. Straight up played video from their depositions demonstrating the saying shit completely opposite what they testified to in court.

There's no penalty. There's no perjury. There is no accountability. How do we expect to have a functioning society without any accountability for lies? I mean sure, they may lose and take a money judgment slap. But, that only encourages them to lie even harder ... or better the next time.

Fuck, me. I hate liars.
