“Three people involved in bringing Starlink to Ukraine, all of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity because they worried that Musk, if upset, could withdraw his services, told me that they originally overlooked the significance of his personal control. “Nobody thought about it back then,” one of them, a Ukrainian tech executive, told me. “It was all about ‘Let’s fucking go, people are dying.’ ””
Abusing the desperation of my people for his own gain.
“The Financial Times reported that outages affected units in Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, Donetsk, and Luhansk. American and Ukrainian officials told me they believed that SpaceX had cut the connectivity via geofencing, cordoning off areas of access.”
“Typically, such a negotiation would be handled by the Pentagon’s acquisitions department. But Musk had become more than just a vender like Boeing, Lockheed, or other defense-industry behemoths. “
Why are we letting rich people have this much power? Just because they are rich?? Not elected to any office, not bound by any responsibilities of a government official….
I went on a #marketing#podcast with Omniscient Digital, where we talked about:
- Where the Internet might be headed next + my coup reporting here (5:12) - Explaining what #Mastodon, the #Fediverse, and #ActivityPub are (12:56) - @pluralistic's "enshittification" as applied to #content (24:29) - How being from #Ukraine impacts my business (40:30)
I loved this one, hope some of you might enjoy it too:
"I found myself reporting to 100s of people, live on #Mastodon, about this coup in #Russia. And it was a big moment. It was kind of the first time on Mastodon that people were able to keep up with current events live, like on Twitter. It hadn’t happened before. People thought it was impossible, not enough users, without an algorithm nobody could find posts, there wouldn't be enough posts, or loading would be too slow between servers. But here I was, kind of making social media history.” (6:21)
“Now, I think the Internet 2 years from now will not look like it did for the last 15 years.
I think where it's headed is more fragmented and niche spaces. It might be similar to what it was maybe in the early 2000s, where we had a bunch of forum boards, different sites for different purposes.
It wasn't all one feed, it wasn't all like 2 social networks where you'd get everything. It was more fragmented. And I think that is where we're headed again.”
“I also miss, there used to be these websites, or on most websites you'd have a page with recommendations.
People would curate other websites that others should go to. And that would be how you'd find your stuff, instead of a social media algorithm promoting things to you. Like the old days of blogging too.”
“Enshittification is this idea that websites and social media companies go through these cycles:
Stage 1 - you're trying to get users on there, to get network effects and to get popular, capture as much market share as possible. So you're giving value to users that is better than anybody else gives them.
The hardest part in trying to write about #Threads is figuring out how to compassionately describe both sides of the divide.
On one hand, I’m rooted in the #Fediverse camp and you have all seen me making fun of the cringe and status-chasing on Threads.
On the other hand, I’m a marketer and a long-time lover of many mainstream web spaces. I don’t hate a lot of popular culture. And I missed so many of the people who only now migrated from #Twitter.
Now let's see if other channels or independent news from Russia covered any details mainstream propaganda may have omitted. I'll start with Meduza
When authorities raided Prigozhin's office in #StPetersburg they apparently found solid gold bars and fake passports in Prigozhin's name. But shortly after - all mentions of the raid were removed
The situation with roads near #Moscow is very confusing.
Russian transportation authorities first announced that all movement limitation were removed... and then a couple hours later that they were still active. https://t.me/meduzalive/86652
So if Russian outlets aren’t really talking about what’s happening with Prigozhin anymore, what are they talking about? (Still in relation to the coup)
Let’s look at the Telegram channel for Russia’s main “news” / propaganda network, RIA Novosti.
