@sinbad And on early Macintosh a reduction of hidden commands. Everything you could do was visible in a menu or on screen.

But the sections in the early Macintosh manual on how to use a mouse (which was limited to 1 button to make them easier to learn for complete neophytes) is multiple pages with graphics and so on. Really shows how far we’ve come from those first days.

@sinbad Computer glasses are so worth it. Neck pain reduction and ability to have your monitors at the distance you prefer for posture etc.

I had to measure the actual distance from my eyes to the monitor and take that in to the eye doc to get the prescription right. If you just ask for mid-distance they may not do it at the distance you prefer. (I’m also having depth of field reduction being an element of the challenge).

@sinbad For technical stuff it’s really helpful to include a date because things change so much you otherwise can easily be unsure if this something is still the state of things. Version numbers of platforms, tools, and so on really help also. It’s amazing how many posts there are missing this kind of important information, or even a date.

@sinbad Plus at ~US$150, those aren’t snob headphones. Just no longer “Cheap Junk.” Snob headphones start at at least twice that. At least that’s what my actual snob headphone friend spent 😂

Attached: 1 image Important reminder, if you own a domain name and don't use it for sending email. There is nothing to stop scammers from sending email claiming to be coming from your domain. And the older it gets, the more valuable it is for spoofing. It could eventually damage your domain's reputation and maybe get it blacklisted, unless you take the steps to notify email servers that any email received claiming to come from your domain should be trashed. Just add these two TXT records to the DNS for your domain: TXT v=spf1 -all TXT v=DMARC1; p=reject; The first says there is not a single SMTP server on earth authorized to send email on behalf of your domain. The second says that any email that says otherwise should be trashed. If you do use your domain for sending email, be sure to add 3 records: SPF record to indicate which SMTP server(s) are allowed to send your email. DKIM records to add a digital signature to emails, allowing the receiving server to verify the sender and ensure message integrity. DMARC record that tells the receiving email server how to handle email that fails either check. You cannot stop scammers from sending email claiming to be from your domain, any more than you can prevent people from using your home address as a return address on a mailed letter. But, you can protect both your domain and intended scam victims by adding appropriate DNS records. UPDATE: The spf and the dmarc records need to be appropriately named. The spf record should be named "@", and the dmarc record name should be "_dmarc". Here's what I have for one domain. One difference that I have is that I'm requesting that email providers email me a weekly aggregated report when they encounter a spoof. gmail and Microsoft send them, but most providers won't, but since most email goes to Gmail, it's enlightening when they come. #cybersecurity #email #DomainSpoofing #EmailSecurity #phishing

@sinbad Interesting. No extra sugar in my wife’s sourdough bread. Maybe the type of wheat she uses or the multi-day feeding it gets.

@sinbad So many weird things with resonance and whatnot that sometimes just changing the rpm by a little changes things in significant ways from my ear’s perspective. Might be worth a try. Glad to hear you improved it with placement. Machine whines are not happy things.

@sinbad Can you control the fan speeds any and just reduce them by 10% or something?

@sinbad Excellent! I insulated our attic to R30 but after talking to a neighbor who put in R60, I’m going to upgrade. Their house definitely is warmer in winter and cooler in summer :)

I think you have to count the heat generated by your cats though, given how active they seem to be :)

@thomasfuchs @toba Are you interested in counter thoughts on this? Asking because I drafted a lengthy reply but then realized you might not be interested and thus it might be annoying (which I have no interest in being).

@jrose @Catfish_Man I found this a bit chilling when extrapolated to society as a whole. Due to a year+ of fairly intense interaction with the US medical system (two hospitals, ER departments, medical clinics, etc) I know the medical system has been squeezed for profit so much that it has little redundancy and limited resilience. How many other systems in society has been squeezed by profit maximizing to become brittle and vulnerable? 🤔

    @Catfish_Man Not that I remember.

    Quick search found this:

    https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15805459/

And this post that talks about it and provides some context:

    https://ferd.ca/notes/paper-going-solid.html

Neither of which I’ve read yet, but I will.

If you have a better thing to read on it, sure, I’d like to see it.

    Thank you.

@inthehands Reed College professors assigned grades so you have a transcript and can apply to graduate school, but as long as you’re passing your classes you don’t see your grades until you apply to graduate school or make an effort to go check (which is generally lightly discouraged). An effort is made to help transition students to intrinsic motivation - I’m interested in this subject and like learning - from the overly extrinsic motivation regimen in elementary and high school.

@inthehands This is very freeing for many. Uncomfortable for those who’ve bought into maximizing the external measure.

Downside: It can hurt people who want to go to graduate school but who listen to the “don’t think about grades” guidance and don’t think about the need to do well to get in to graduate school.
