I suspect that removing 12V power in the OBD2 port is enough to foil most of these tools. The adapters I saw in the video all seem to require 12V power to boot up and operate—I suspect this is because they have to generate 12V pulses to communicate on the CANBus. Maybe there’s an OBD2 power fuse you can pull. That would be a pretty cheap way to protect your car from thieves.
Just don’t forget to put the fuse back in when you smog your car.
These guys tracked down an expert car thief and got him to explain how he can steal cars in under 30 seconds.
tl;dr: Most modern cars contain well-known software vulnerabilities that are accessible through the OBD2 connector. Unscrupulous Chinese manufacturers have cataloged and automated these exploits using tablets and OBD2 adapters, and you can buy these tools freely and legally online. You may need a blank key fob from the right manufacturer, but the app literally automates the job.
Car makers have been shipping vulnerable software for decades without consequence (car owners and dealerships end up paying for theft, not manufacturers), and they continue to do so. Only Ford appears to be improving their security.
@stux I agree with you, but in the US it’s that gun owners here as a collective have decided that dead mall shoppers, dead schoolchildren, and huge numbers of self-inflicted gun deaths are an *acceptable cost* of being able to own guns.
It’s not about “the right to bear arms”—that’s just rationalization. It’s about being so utterly selfish that one’s ability to play with guns is far more important than other people dying because of one’s hobby.
I’m not sure how SF city code works, but why did this have to be a *state bill*? The problem seems localized to SF (and a specific BART station within SF). I can see why the state assembly would be reluctant to pass a bill that regulated street vending across the entire state, but was really made to address the problem that exists only within SF.
I’ve seen a lot of body-shaming on my Facebook feed recently, mostly aimed at making fun of Elon or Trump for the way they look (Elon looks like Baron Harkonnen! Ha! Ha!), and although I see a lot of comments pushing back, there are plenty of people who think this is OK because we’re making fun of an awful person.
IT IS NOT OK TO BODY-SHAME, even when the person you’re making fun of is horrible. Horrible people are *never* horrible because of the way they look, only what they do. By making fun of their appearance, you’re unavoidably sending a message that certain body types are inherently bad or fit for ridicule. You’re being an asshole, even if you’re mocking a bad person.
Please make sure to call out instances of body- or appearance-shaming, *especially* in otherwise progressive and inclusive forums. It is never OK to make fun of people’s appearance.
@fuck_cars_bot@wordshaper Please credit the original artist. Sarah Andersen’s work has been stolen and regurgitated so much (both by humans and AI); we should help her get the recognition she deserves.
Here’s your regular reminder that the daily commute is bullshit and an unpaid waste of workers’ time. The need to commute causes traffic congestion, pollution, carbon emissions, and wear and tear on equipment, and is a root cause of the horrible housing affordability crises in metros across the country.
We proved during #covid shutdown years that remote work is viable. We got so much time back, the roads were empty, and we still got shit done. Anyone claiming that quality work is impossible without a daily commute is simply lying to you. They want your butts in office seats to feel powerful, and to prop up their real estate investments.
Never forget: commuting is an unpaid hardship that comes out of your lifespan. Don’t simply accept it as the cost of doing business.
@kaia Convincing people that the things you put between your feet and the dirt on the ground should always look brand new is an amazing feat of marketing.
It looks like companies think that the Overton window on #DEI has now passed, and they are starting to can the teams that were supposed to help them meet their goals.
“Microsoft laid off a DEI team, and its lead wrote an internal email blasting how DEI is 'no longer business critical’”
@kaia I had to download a taskbar program to control my LG 5K monitor’s brightness from Windows. Which is great because the monitor has no physical controls.
