I posted about how the iOS development space is very white, male, and straight. A lot of white, male, straight people seemed to think this was me telling them they’re doing something wrong.
I said that I don’t see a lot of people like me in my field. If your immediate reaction to that is defensive in any way, you’re the problem. You need to examine why that makes you react defensively. That’s my advice on how to improve diversity. Interrogate your own bias.
I just wanna say that not only do I work with the smartest people, but also the *kindest* people, and it makes all the difference. If you’re a manager, assemble people who are genuine and helpful and kind and respectful, and see the great things that come out of it. You won’t regret it.
Twitter can’t fire me anymore for saying this, but the last few months I worked there, it was a shit show. Just executives jumping ship left and right while repeating “it will be okay.” Employees were getting doxxed. I was harassed online by right wing trolls. Someone from Project Veritas called my parents pretending to be from a life insurance company. I can’t even begin to state how little thought and effort was put into protecting the legacy of that place. They all just gave up.
It was all “fiduciary responsibility to the investors” but what about the responsibility to Twitter’s users? All the people for whom it is a lifeline for fundraising or because they have nobody IRL? Those who rely on accessibility features that were unceremoniously yanked? Those who built whole communities and careers on there? Those who used it to stay safe from gun violence and natural disasters? It was a public service.
I will never stop being mad, and I’m really not that mad at Elon because I knew what he was already. I’m mad at Parag and Jack and all the people that sold out while at the same time pretending not much would change.
