There was a Spanish exchange student in our high school last year. She was from Valencia. It turns out, her family ran a business that has been destroyed by the floods. Her family is ok, but she has friends who have perished.
Over 200 dead so far in #Valencia from #ClimateDisaster floods. Thousands displaced and disrupted. Towns and communities are cut off. Thousands are in need of basic supplies. The video is from Chiva (Xiva) where 490mm (20in) of rain fell in 8 hours, creating the incredible torrents.

Your good news for the day. HUMANITY! Thousands of volunteers from in and around the City of Valencia that were not as badly hit, headed into the affected areas today to help!
Since most roads and railways are blocked they came mostly on foot with their brooms, shovels, and packs of supplies.
Humanity is always at its best when its looking out for one another!!
The town of Chiva, about 50km upland to the east of the City of Valencia is where they recorded the historic nearly 500mm of rain. There are mountains about 50-100km inland of the entire Spanish coast, so the rain accumulates into the river valleys there and floods to the coast.
Hey @GottaLaff! You know how Project 2025 proposes to get rid of things like the NOAA and FEMA? Well the left-wing government in the Valencia region got replaced last year with a right wing government and lo-and-behold:
"Valencia’s regional government has also been forced to defend its decision to scrap the Valencia Emergency Unit, which had been set up by the previous government to tackle natural disasters such as flooding and wildfires.”
“With every fraction of a degree of fossil fuel warming, the atmosphere can hold more moisture, leading to heavier bursts of rainfall,” said Dr Friederike Otto, from Imperial College London, who leads an international group of scientists who try to understand the role that warming plays in these type of events. “No doubt about it, these explosive downpours were intensified by climate change.” https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c99ry7x925eo
@blogdiva There is no Paella Valenciana, because all Valencia IS Paella!! 🥘 😀
My Grandma taught my mom (her daughter in law) how to make paella over a fire. Hers was generally rabbit and seafood (muscles, clams, prawns) because that was what most people had easiest access to! We use chicken most often now instead of rabbit but it is always amazing!!
If you hate protesters blocking roads in the name of taking immediate #ClimateAction, you’re going to really hate how Climate Change itself blocks roads.
A picture today from Valencia, Spain where they received 500mm of rain, a year’s worth, in one day on Tuesday. At least 70 dead. #ClimateEmergency#ClimateChange
edit: More Pictures of the destruction. Valencia is the third largest city in Spain. It affected areas just to the south of it mainly as well as other areas of SouthEast Spain.
How would you like to see a 300 year-old tree? Oh sorry it's not standing. It's in a truck. The #BCElxn2024 is over. Time to start shipping out the old growth trees again. I am following this truck on the highway right now 😠 😠 🌳 🌳 #BCHWY4#BCPOLI#Forestry#EndOldGrowthLogging
Unsolicited opinion: If #Mastodon wants to be a part of the #Fediverse that encourages small #selfhosted instances to be part of the whole, then it has to be a lean system able to be installed on second-hand/hand-me-down hardware and it should run reasonably well.
ElasticSearch/Java is a barrier to that. It is a huge memory hog compared to the rest of the system.
