Pues si ahora hay que aprender a usar #XMPP se aprende y punto. Cuenta creada y apps instaladas en ordenador y móvil.

Existe un canal #XMPP con más de 100 personas llamado La república del Fediverso.

La solución pasa entonces por cambiar el sistema: dejar de depender de plataformas producto de un sistema de extracción capitalista.

Sí, eso es verdad, pero también es cierto que así operaba Telegram allá por 2014. Luego empezaron a vender "una nube 100% gratis para ti" que, obviamente, no era económicamente viable. Durante un tiempo metieron muchas actualizaciones muy chulas, no hay que desmerecer su trabajo, pero Telegram ya no es lo que prometía y han entrado en el negocio de la IA.

Pues sí... asterisco. Están encriptados, pero las claves las almacenan ellos. Su compromiso es que hacen como que no pueden entrar a los chats, pero desde su punto de vista podrían guardar vuestros mensajes en texto plano.

Ojo al lenguaje: no estoy diciendo que "nos vayamos a XMPP". No hay un "irse a XMPP" de la misma forma que sí hay un "me voy a Signal", porque XMPP no es una plataforma, sino un protocolo. Cualquiera puede implementar o desplegar un servidor de XMPP o escribir un cliente para la plataforma que quiera. Y aquí uso "plataforma" de la forma correcta: el sistema operativo. Cualquiera puede hacer su propio programa en Windows, Linux, Mac, Android, iOS, BSD, KaiOS, PSP, 3DS, Kindle o nevera, porque XMPP no es una aplicacion. XMPP es una tecnología.

Se viene lista de aplicaciones que podéis probar en casa antes de darle la chapa a vuestras respectivas familias... ¡en el siguiente mensaje del hilo!

Thanks for the thread and the linked Mastodon hosting architecture. I'd love to see a write-up of the possible and reasonable architectural decisions that went into this, and how they can help reduce the Mastodon hosting bill.

As somebody running a 3k users #xmpp server on a ~15€/mo VM I'm also shocked by the huge numbers going around.

#DeltaChat has no forward secrecy.
And depended on SHA-1 and using MD5.
Both are considered weak cryptography if I'm not mistaken.
While I believe deltachat to be a great app with good use case, it's not what I'm looking for.

#xmpp ecosystem is?/was! pretty bad in serving proper e2ee cross platform implementation.
Till recently there was only conversations as a usable app. Since some weeks ago it seems that @dino now also offers e2ee by default. But also both conversations and Dino using an outdated omemo specification, and are by that not compatible with @kaidan.
I will reconsider xmpp when they adapt the newer specification.

@briar not mentioned, but also no, cause it's not working on #TailsOS or on android with Orbot.
So very much unusable, since it's not running on the platforms we use.

So installed prosody on my small personal instance and finally run my own #XMPP server. This was surprisingly simple and seems pretty lightweight . Well I don’t know if I did it right 😅 but it seems to work.
