I feel like this shouldn't need to be pointed out, but the slowness, app not connecting, http 503 errors... this is not normal behavior around here. Mastodon has absorbed like a million new users in the last 2 weeks and is run by volunteers. Please be a little patient while the admins catch up (AND TIP THEM!). #twittermigration#patienceisavirtue
Now @Raspberry_Pi has its own @Mastodon instance, and because we’re committed to supporting platforms that support us, we’re putting our money where our mouth is. We have become a platinum sponsor of #Mastodon. In case you don't know Mastodon is a non-profit corporation based in Germany supported by both its sponsors and patreons. #TwitterMigrationhttps://joinmastodon.org/sponsors
Definitely deserving of a big, hearty Fediverse Welcome, with no GamerGate cucks in sight to protect her from negative attention with their Literally Who bullshit.
I can't be the only classics nerd feeling like Elon Musk is having a Xerxes-lashes-the-Hellespont meltdown over #Twitter.
History repeats itself. This time it's hubris in the digital world.
"Herodotus understood, over two millennia ago, a lesson we struggle with in modern times: that technology, neutral in itself, provides tools. Xerxes' men could build a great bridge. But Xerxes forgot what it was to be a man. Technology can all too easily be abused." https://www.uh.edu/engines/epi2310.htm#TwitterMigration
As a woman with a blue check & Jewish name on #Twitter, the network stopped being fun long ago. I had reasons to stay, but in recent years, people or bots who disagreed with my posts increasingly responded with sexism, antisemitism, disturbing Holocaust imagery & creepy DMs.
Say what you will about free speech, but the toxic environment there discourages a diversity of voices & ideas.
Is #Mastodon better? So far, there’s no question it is for me. I hope it stays that way. #TwitterMigration
Hello I'm part of the #twittermigration from #twitter, I mainly posted about my dog, my pottery, cartoons, my opinions on tech and media as a person of color, and cryptic jabs at my job. Cheers
first time I went to the US, I tried to order some coffee at a coffee shop, and had to answer several questions about how I wanted it. I didn't even understand several of the questions. I found that experience annoying and upsetting. I suppose having to choose an instance when what you want is to join a network may come across as a similar experience. but ultimately it's a choice that has to be made, it's like choosing a neighborhood where your home is going to be. maybe what's no so clear is that your first dip into it doesn't have to be a final commitment: you can "rent a room" while you get acquainted and look for a more permanent place to establish yourself. this might be an important piece of messaging that could make the whole experience less upsetting.
now, starting out at an instance you find hostile could be even more upsetting. setting expectations correctly can be tricky, since even that attempt could scare people away or be used as propaganda against the fediverse.

We should be respectful of the mood in different instances in Fediverse. After all, we are being hosted by volunteers. I've paid my annual subscription upfront to help with the burden of #TwitterMigration. I'm very appreciative of the mood here and have no interest in recreating Twitter. https://www.hughrundle.net/home-invasion/
Currently writing a blog post about the new @Raspberry_Pi instance we spun up last night. I'm taking about why, as a company, we're doing it. What it means, and (the fun bit) how we did it. Because it's running on a Pi in the Sky☁️ on a #RaspberryPi 4 with #IPv6 only networking hosted at @beasts. We're part of the #TwitterMigration, and taking a step back, the social and technical bits of that are actually sort of fascinating
so far, I've seen analogies of social media federation with email, bank transfers, telephone calling, (theoretical) messaging between twitter and facebook...
has any of the recently-welcome fedizens found any of them to make sense of the notion of federation?

I feel like I’m buzzed at a party and someone is trying to explain an intense card game to me. I’m having war flashbacks to Settlers of Catan in some college dorm.
How do I switcher servers? Why are there Nazis? Why is some goatee’d guy named Mark explaining the rules while breathing down my neck?
