first time I went to the US, I tried to order some coffee at a coffee shop, and had to answer several questions about how I wanted it. I didn't even understand several of the questions. I found that experience annoying and upsetting. I suppose having to choose an instance when what you want is to join a network may come across as a similar experience. but ultimately it's a choice that has to be made, it's like choosing a neighborhood where your home is going to be. maybe what's no so clear is that your first dip into it doesn't have to be a final commitment: you can "rent a room" while you get acquainted and look for a more permanent place to establish yourself. this might be an important piece of messaging that could make the whole experience less upsetting.
now, starting out at an instance you find hostile could be even more upsetting. setting expectations correctly can be tricky, since even that attempt could scare people away or be used as propaganda against the fediverse.

@rtn @osiris complaining to having a choice makes sense? to me it's the most weird thing ever that some people prefer the absence of choice. -

So I am hearing that some people are unhappy about the "onboarding" (whatever that means) from birdsite to the fediverse? What are some of the complaints?
