How is #Intuit so bad at everything except, seemingly, income-tax software? They spammed me today at an email address which to my knowledge has never had an Intuit account associated with it. When I click the unsubscribe link it brings me to their login page. But I can't log in with that email address—no account!—so I can't unsubscribe. This is both stupid and illegal; working unsubscribe links are a requirement of the CAN-SPAM act. I sent them a #privacy complaint. We'll see what happens. #spam
For the record: #Intuit replied to my #spam complaint and told me I could go to https://data-privacy.app.intuit.com/preferences to unsubscribe from their spam. I've done that; we'll see if it works. Needless to say, they completely ignored the portion of my complaint where I pointed out that the unsubscribe link in their spam didn't work and that that's a violation of federal law. 🤷 #privacy
I love the WebDAV protocol and its extensions (CardDAV and CalDAV). Syncing Contacts between Android and Desktop (GNOME Contacts) is pretty convenient and private. It also works pretty well with tasks.org app for Android and Errands app for GNOME to have ToDo lists completely synced between devices. I'm very happy with this productivity and private solution.
Signal adds a bunch of new calling features: a dedicated calls tab, call links, raise hand button, emoji reactions, and much more. https://signal.org/blog/call-links/
I've just ordered a Pixel 9 Pro XL. I won't even try the stock Android, I'll immediately install #GrapheneOS on it since day 1 (that will be tomorrow).
With the Android 15 Private Space feature (and the GrapheneOS team made it possible to install Google Services inside it, disabling them when the space is locked), I can enable and disable that space (and Google Services) when needed and without having to change profile. This is impressive and, for me, a game changer.
I'll try everything for some time. The battery life of my Pixel 7 without the Google services has been impressive. Today, I had a great experience with it as a main phone.
While I used it all the day, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra was idle (5 minutes of screen time). The Pixel consumes 22% of battery, the Samsung 20% - just being idle. No calls, no videos, just a bunch of notifications.
If the Pixel will have a comparable battery life to the Samsung, I'll keep it and eventually sell the Samsung.
A huge thank you to all the people the helped me to debug all the issues (I'm not tagging them as I'm sure I'll forget some) and to the GrapheneOS team for the great, impressive work they're doing.
It's funny to see people leaving #X to join #bluesky or #threads. They're all billionaire driven spyware, manipulative, toxic spaces. I mentioned them yesterday during my keynote speech "Quo vadis, Free Software (quo vadis, society" at #FOSSCOMM2024 in Greece. #Freedom#privacy
I have for the last 11 years talked about the problem with user profiling and algorithmic content. Creation of echo chambers and the ability to easily manipulate what people see for marketing purposes and worse. Even made a cat video to try to make the point. I wish more would see this.
The point is not for political parties to see the potential here, but rather to see the risk. The only way to fix this is to ban user profiling.
You have made a good choice to move the the Fediverse. It would help for more of your friends to join us.
In addition to possibly allowing censored Signal users to continue using Signal in an internet censored region, using a Signal proxy will also protect a user from disclosing any network metadata to or from *.signal.org domains to spying network admins or ISPs.
