It should matter that one of Bluesky's investors is Alumni Ventures, which also funded Outlogic (formerly known as X-Mode Social) - basically a data broker that collected and sold location data by tracking various mobile apps (including dating, music, weather, and Muslim prayer apps.)
Among other controversies, Outlogic/X‑Mode had supplied location data to U.S. military contractors:

Meta’s #Threads wants access to your entire life. #Mastodon just wants to connect you with cool people. Why settle for poor moderation, algorithms, and invasive privacy settings?
Threads asks for:
🛑 Your location
🛑 Your browsing habits
🛑 Your financial data
🛑 and more… (over a dozen items in total!)
Mastodon asks for:
✅ Nothing but your awesome vibes

DNA firm holding highly sensitive data 'vanishes' without warning
A DNA-testing firm appears to have ceased trading - without telling its customers what has happened to the highly sensitive data they shared with it.
Atlas Biomed users are no longer able to access their personalised reports online and the company has not responded to the BBC's requests for comment.

Funny how, a decade ago, they called us “tin-foil hat conspiracy theorists” for suggesting such things and we were shunned by “respectable” folks in the web community afraid to lose their favoured status as Big Tech’s bottom feeders.

The devil is in the details! 😈
Today X changed their #privacy policy & terms of service.
2 Highlights:
-They "collect and use your #biometric information"
-3rd party collaborators might "train their artificial intelligence models" on user #data
As a surprise for #X "Premium's Anniversary" we decided to make another guide 😜
If you still have #Xitter, make sure your "Data sharing with business partners" setting is disabled!

@tama Banning social media for the kids... ummm, ok. Affecting everyone's privacy to achieve it... ok here's the real purpose... but... banning youtube, but not snapchat? Trying hard not to fall into a conspiracy theory, but that smells a lot like trying to control the narrative. Which I agree with to a point... the bad actors on places like youtube is certainly a problem. Is banning the platform the solution though?
For me: Privacy is important. Free access to information is important. Freedom from manipulation is important. Basically in that order. The third is in conflict with the second. #privacy
#Privacy, Why? - https://www.tbray.org/ongoing/When/202x/2024/11/14/Why-Privacy "If only the “suspicious” stuff is made private, then our adversaries will assume that anything that’s private must be suspicious. That endangers our basic civilizational privacy privilege and isn’t a place we want to be."

#Facts that #Mastodon users always refuse to accept, yet these are true:
#Brave is the best browser and a search engine. No else #browser is better then it. No else search engine. Not even #Firefox or #Chrome .
#iPhone are the best phones with their iOS to exist. And no, Android devices aren't better.
#Bluesky is the best alternative to #Twitter /#X , the one true, DECENTRALIZED (yes, it has its own #ATProtocol ) alternative that we all need.
#ZCash is a better #privacy focused #cryptocurrency then #Monero .
From my interactions with Mastodon users, all of these facts aren't accepted by them at all, they really start to strongly defend their beliefs, starting to talking about either reputation or behavement of a person/company, or either their past actions. Guess what? I don't care about anything of that; I just need a good product that worth to use.
I'll add more to that list, if I'll think of any.

Today we've published our alternative report into the Information Commissioner's Office (UK) 📑
An overly cautious approach to enforcing data protection law puts government and corporate preferences before the needs of the public.
A slap on the wrist does nothing to protect privacy.
The ICO's controversial policy of not fining public sector organisations in the UK, except for the most serious cases, fails to deter them from breaching data protection law.
The ICO must use its full powers, including enforcement notices and fines, to make data protection law effective.
The ICO has also closed down ORG's complaint about Meta’s plans to process users’ data for AI development.
They've refused to meaningfully justify their decision and remain silent on why they think the requirement to seek opt in consent doesn't apply to Meta.

How is #Intuit so bad at everything except, seemingly, income-tax software?
They spammed me today at an email address which to my knowledge has never had an Intuit account associated with it. When I click the unsubscribe link it brings me to their login page. But I can't log in with that email address—no account!—so I can't unsubscribe.
This is both stupid and illegal; working unsubscribe links are a requirement of the CAN-SPAM act.
I sent them a #privacy complaint. We'll see what happens.
