Finally got around to checking out Revolt Chat. It's basically a Free Code Discord clone. If they were going to federate with other chat servers, matrix is probably the best choice, given it's a room-orientated UX and needs a concept like Spaces. If anyone thinks that Revolt could be federated with XMPP, I'd be interested to hear some details on how that would work.
Citation du développeur principal: "Sorry but Pixelfed users don't want to see WordPress/Ghost/WriteFreely posts in feeds just because they have an image attachment.
The purpose of Pixelfed is photo sharing, that is the context, not the caption, the caption can be empty, because it's not the focus.
If it matches the swipe-speed joy of mainstream apps while keeping open follows, portable identity, and community moderation, #creators get reach without lock-in.
One viral template or creator wave can turn #federation from concept into daily routine: and that’s how ecosystems tip.
#Loops key: frictionless onboarding, fast discovery, and easy cross-posting to other servers.
I've noticed lately that when viewing a profile from a Mastodon instance, their post history tends to be incomplete or otherwise missing. Any posts that are made recently tend to have a significant delay or don't show up on their profile at all.
I know that you can view the content from the remote instance in question for a complete profile, that you need to do so however does seem to be a failing on the part of the server software to properly federate and populate posts.
You really ought to write a blog post on epistemic heuristics and the impact that it has on moderating communities @xaetacore. I've known for a while what it was through observing cause and effect, but never really knew the proper terminology for it until recently. A lot of interactions suddenly made a whole lot of sense afterward in retrospect.
That right there grapples with some uncomfortable truths. Inclusion today is no longer as it was in the early days of the Free and Open Source movement. Instead comes with a lot of asterisks and caveats attached that aren't very inclusive despite otherwise appearing to be on the surface.
Truth of the matter is that the current political climate has over time radicalized and eroded the patience we once had for each other. Leaving many to land on the conclusion that it may honestly be for the best to drop any pretenses of inclusion and equity in favor of tighter in groups that share more in common with you and thus less likely to challenge your beliefs.
After two great days focusing on the XMPP ecosystem and its future we are closing the 28th XMPP Summit. Many thanks to all 35+ participants! https://xmpp.org/2025/11/xmpp-summit-28/
Meet us tomorrow at #FOSDEM 2026! #ULB, AW Building, Level 1
Of all of the chat platforms I have available to me. I like Matrix the most, but i struggle to get others to use it.
It's free, private (if you need it to be), and could replace Discord as a platform. But I cant seem to convince others to join me, even groups of fellow nerds, they just arent interested.
After a long time, carrying the Matrix torch, I am considering abandoning ship. One less platform to monitor (admittedly its easy to monitor,. NO ONE interacts with me there), one less service to maintain (i run my own homeserver), one less piece of software to monitor for updates. One less window to have open all of the time, and One less app on my phone.
Getting Forgejo and mastodon services to talk had some unexpected pitfalls. Mastodon only federates on port 443 for example, that means Forgejo needs to be able to listen on a privileged port even for testing. You can imagine the troubles setting up our e2e tests properly.
This is finally behind us and were now aiming to integrate the test into the automated test suite (with a lot of work already done by @famfo)
Today's AWS debacle is the perfect example of the reason why in the last few years I started to be less enthusiastic about Signal, and more oriented to federated or even P2P solutions like XMPP and Jami. I wrote about it already:
Let's ignore for a second the blind reliance on AWS or any other cloud provider. In a decentralized system, this would not have happened, or at least it would have not impacted so many users.
Yes, I am a cryptographer myself, I know that Signal's encryption is the best. But encryption is not everything. Availability issues, geopolitical troubles, risk of enshittification, limitations on users' freedom to use and control the software lead to a lack of trust, even in a supersecure solution. And I say that with honest admiration for the folks at Signal, who are doing a great job.
