Our podcast about the fediverse, Dot Social, is one today! 🎉 It’s been such an honor to host the builders of the social web on this show and to learn from them. We have one more episode coming up in 2024 (read the blogpost to find out who @mike will be chatting with) then rest, then back at it in 2025.

With the latest exodus from the #birdshite, I'm hearing lots of tech/social-media "experts" doing interviews, talking about the social media landscape and #Bluesky versus #Threads.
Somehow they never – or barely – mention the issue of centralized corporate ownership and Mastodon/Fedi and the federation concept get no mention at all.
Besides being shoddy journalism, it makes them look quite ill-informed on their supposed core expertise.
Likewise, if we do want #bluesky #starterpack - style solutions, what does that mean to #mastodon from a stability perspective?
I noticed @jwz recently, talking about serious performance-related slowdown issues, related to having an account that is VERY popular. So, what does that mean if we create solutions which greatly encourage account popularity, without actually addressing server issues first?
In short, the issue of starter packs isn't just a simple good / bad question.
@123leon So far #Bluesky is gaining more users: https://mastodon.social/@madeindex/113510826658440413

Is @bsky.brid.gy still working? A friend over on #Bluesky tried to follow @ap.brid.gy over there but I still cannot see them from here.

"Decentralised social media is more than just a technical shift; it's a step toward restoring autonomy and trust in our digital lives, empowering individuals and communities to connect without compromising their values or privacy."
A study by the Oxford Martin School at the University of Oxford finds that decentralised social media leads to citizen empowerment.

"Disruption happens slowly. And then, all at once!" - Futurist Jim Carroll
Long live Twitter.
Good riddance X.
Lots of people have finally had enough of Twitter. Whether it's the toxic environment, personal revulsion with the owner, the relentless anti-Semitism that is pervasive in the network, or the fact that it has simply become unusable for anything useful, lots of people have had enough.
And as of this week, they're going to Bluesky.
Technological shifts, when they happen, are often sudden and dramatic.
“How did you go bankrupt?” Bill asked.
“Two ways,” Mike said. “Gradually and then suddenly.”
The Sun Also Rises, Ernest Hemingway’s
Kevin Kelly, the co-founder of Wired, put an oft-used spin on Hemingways's observation, noting that "the future happens slowly, and then, all at once." Right now, at this very moment, it's all at once.
What has been happening in the last few days is simply remarkable - it seems that entire communities of people have finally decided they have had enough of the rage-baiting, Nazi-leaning, extreme right-wing toxic sludge that Twitter has become post-election.
I'm a big fan of Mastodon - I have my own instance. But we can't deny the sudden shift in momentum that is happening.

Today is my Fediverse cake day!
I've been here for seven years.
Damn.
Cheers @jerry for running this (and several other) fediverse servers!
And cheers to everyone else for the great conversations, info exchanges, memes, and shit posts!
People are importing their lame #tweets to #Bluesky - https://mashable.com/article/bluesky-importing-tweets-x-posts yeah, how about no?
I really do get why people are on #BlueSky, there's a critical mass occurring there.
But please, please, please don't pontificate about how you're striking a blow for social justice by being on #BlueSky. It's literally the same bad actors funding it.
I finally made a #BlueSky account because it seems all the authors I want to follow are over there and not coming over here.
I quickly discovered that BlueSky appears to lack the ability to mute reposts on a per-account basis, a #Mastodon feature I didn't realize I lean on so heavily until I had to do without. (Lots of people have interesting posts of their own, but they repost waaaay too frequently and overwhelm the feed.)
Everyone on #Bluesky seem very busy congratulating themselves on fleeing #Muskodon to the new bright, shiny refuge. New #Twitter, same as the old Twitter. Meanwhile, back on the Bad Place, a techbro billionaire (#BillAckman), suggests buying the new, blue, bird, and shutting it down.
