I had started a project "ActivityPub" waaaay back in the OStatus days, as a client API that used the Atom format for Activity Streams data over the AtomPub API (thanks @timbray ). When @erincandescent submitted the first draft of AP, she used "ActivityPump" because it was mostly a spin on the pump.io API. We changed the name to ActivityPub just before releasing the spec.
