Our attention is scattered; our senses are deadened. People treat music as wallpaper, as mood lighting, as a narcotic. Honestly and without irony, I am just so happy any time anybody actually •listens• to music at all. Our attention is scattered; our senses are deadened. People treat music as wallpaper, as mood lighting, as a narcotic. To laugh, to cringe, to be weirded out by music — that’s the kind of attention where we can also let it move us, change us, renew us.
