You'll get people who claim (retardedly) "ALWAYS HAS BEEN" which ignores the bulk of history of a Christendom and the geopolitical conditions (Turks, Huns, etc.) which led to the schism and power consolidation by Rome. Arguments that it was necessary or arguments that it was a power grab both have legs, but it certainly is a reality that the Christian church has had internal and external enemies since its inception.
