I can see this point very well.
At the same time, language is and always has been fluid and constantly evolving.
Humanity is ever more, for better or for worse, migrating into the digital space.
If you have no choice but to leave your digital home, and for a lot of people the social media sites are their 2nd home, then it is ok to apply the language to the same concepts.
IMO, this (serious) use is not a "watering down" of the language....
