Does this account for the relative height of the areas above/below sea level, that globe earth model isn't a perfect sphere, or the variability of height from one location to another (more of the first point)? Obviously it's 'weird', but physics alone is full of heuristics that work reasonably well for normal use but need more specifics when engineering requires it. The mirage effect is a reasonable explanation even if it's not as fun or exciting, but it also seems a bit too much of a hand wave to me— "LOL OF COURSE THE EARTH IS ROUND IT'S A MIRAGE xD". I'm a globe Earth guy, but I don't like lazy answers.
