I know this idea shocks a lot of people but if you are on specialized hardware where regular Linux isn't going to work anyway and you've got to use a heavily modified system, you might have an easier time using something that isn't Linux. $current_year glibc doesn't work on old-timey 2.x Linux.
That having been said, there are semi-maintained forks already. I don't know where to find them because I wouldn't buy an ancient machine just to run $current_year Linux slop on it.
