I know otaku culture is mainstream in Japan because that's like their thing obviously. But if they would actually go after what's maintstream they would just use popular current anime like Jujutsu Kaisen or Demon Slayer or something.
But instead they are going after Y2K era 2ch and NicoNicoDouga stuff specifically.
What McDonald's Japan is doing right now is like the equivalent of McDonald's America making commercials with Tay Zonday and Star Wars Kid.
