The same holds true regarding outright lies about your political oponents. #slander and #libel are not just a private-citizen issue, in particular during elections. Not only the target and his/her family suffer harm. #democracy itself suffers great damage if a qualified candidate isn't elected *solely* due to a mendacious #defamation campaign *or* by lying in ones #CV, for that matter.
It should be seen somewhat like a national-security threat.
