Piracy is a tool that promotes the use of proprietary software and contributes to the creation of monopolies like those of Microsoft or Apple. Microsoft, in a way, doesn’t care if you’re using a pirated copy of Windows, because by doing so, you’re not adopting an replacement operating system, but instead, you’re reinforcing Windows as the only option to use a computer. Using free software is a way to combat the monopolies imposed by proprietary software companies.
