@MeBigbrain @tadano @ChristiJunior @Type_Other I think it was originally to keep the dudes from disinheriting their tribe by marrying outsiders who could flee to mom's coethnics instead. It came in handy when they got here decimated multiple times and cuckolded by foreigners.
