Long story short, I see it as a slur used to brand feminists as evildoers, for not doing feminism in the way that some (arguably very sexist) people want them to.
(Page needs updating to reflect the increasing trend of women "reclaiming" the term, defiantly calling themselves "terf." This is basically like women calling themselves a "bad bitch" in jest. Haven't updated it in a while.)
I say this is my opinion, because I've written that page mostly myself, but to be clear, this is the established viewpoint among the feminists I'm networked with.
There are many people who consider themselves feminists and object to this perspective, but in most cases, these seem to be people who are concerned with chasing abstract ideologies that are currently fashionable in their peer group, disregarding real issues that many women face.
