Rich Felker@benroyce @jmcrookston @palin@mastodon.social I'm by no means well informed on this, but it features pretty commonly in (south) Korean dramas set in historical times. I wouldn't be surprised if it was common throughout much of the old world, and just preserved by the most backwards evil regimes into modern times.
