First virus found was in 1892 apparently, the tobacco mosaic virus. What do you mean evolution doesn't explain them though? They evolve to threats, similar to other lifeforms, but whether or not they have life is the still highly debated part. It's kind of like with cancer imo, it's existed before humanity but our knowledge of the world is still catching up.
