Turn off the electric, and fuel cannot be pumped, farming shuts down as water cannot be pumped, food storage rots, medical life support shuts down, etc. If we were a properly functioning society, everything would be geared towards self-sufficiency. If you could produce your own food and your own medical treatments, you wouldn't depend on corporations and governments.
There's so much to unpack from such a simple question, though. The very concept of government has moved far beyond what the Founders envisioned, and corporations well beyond anything the free market could have night terrors over. No one owns land, everything is rapidly moving towards subscription economics, churn has replaced art, and people are kept distracted with bread and circuses. At this point, my best solution is to formulate what, precisely, kind of society we need to live in and work towards making that happen. But we cannot just tear down this society first, because the shockwave will be catastrophic. It must be a transition.
