That's what happens when you have mass production and industrialized farming. When the People have plenty, they get lazy. Laziness breeds complacency, because they are not being forced through the hard times it takes to keep their edge. One of the biggest factors in this was the post-war economic boom of the 1950s, and what made it worse was them coming out of the Great Depression. Those who had suffered hardship now threw themselves gleefully into consumerism.
