Laziness breeds complacency, because they are not being forced through the hard times it takes to keep their edge. One of the biggest factors in this was the post-war economic boom of the 1950s, and what made it worse was them coming out of the Great Depression. Those who had suffered hardship now threw themselves gleefully into consumerism.
