The foot/meter are standards set by a government (or at least declared to match by a government to some science nerd definution— functionally the same). Industry decided that a so-called '2x4' is 1.5 inches by 3.5 inches (and they even used nonsense logic to shrink it multiple times compared to the 2x4s of old) and it works just fine because it's understood. I'm for pragmatism in this case.
