Whoever has possession will have an incredible advantage when Trump calls for a ceasefire. And "No Piss" Zelensky has never been willing to negotiate in good faith so he won't be part of the bargaining process.

He wants Crimea back. A guy with nuclear ambitions wants the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant returned. He wants it all to go back to how it was before Putin recognized Luhansk and Donestsk. And he wants Russia to foot the bill for *everything*. Oh, and he also wants Putin deposed. Yeah... all of those are non-starters.

You can't hold peace talks with someone that's utterly unreasonable, Ukraine will need a new leader. Ceasefire. Elections. Negotiations. Not necessarily in that order. The fine points of a proper border can be ironed out after Ukraine holds an election. Russia might trade a resource rich area for one that's predominantly Russian.
