You get more net O2 production and CO2 capture during rapid growth phase in primitive plants (look into algae tank pruning), so that might be enough to quiet hippies. The ingredient that actually does the heavy lifting is Bromoform, CHBr3, so maybe they'll just GMO some grass that naturally makes the stuff and simultaneously create a new problem we won't notice for 40 years.
