What really gets me is that hurricanes and tornados are a yearly thing in US and nobody really tried to build houses that can withstand it. European houses can withstands floods because they have few meters of cement under them and are made from thick bricks. Instead the mindset seems to be, it will get destroyed anyway, so just build it like that and rebuild when necessary.
I get it in Japan where they make their houses also thin like this, but they have a reason behind that. Earthquakes.
