     @Nudhul @sun We have floods here on regular basis every few years. Even 50 year old houses can withstand 10-15 inches of water and heavy winds without much problems. Sure, few roof tiles will fly off, but your roof won't collapse. Heck, a tornado went right through a village few years ago and destroyed only a few houses.

     @phnt @Nudhul it's basically because we've had an artificially pumped housing construction market since the 1990s so there's a flurry of money flying around and it all flies into contractor pockets that pump out cardboard houses as fast as they can to sell to suckers

     @sun @Nudhul They are, no doubt about that.
     
     What really gets me is that hurricanes and tornados are a yearly thing in US and nobody really tried to build houses that can withstand it. European houses can withstands floods because they have few meters of cement under them and are made from thick bricks. Instead the mindset seems to be, it will get destroyed anyway, so just build it like that and rebuild when necessary.
     
     I get it in Japan where they make their houses also thin like this, but they have a reason behind that. Earthquakes.

     @sun @phnt @Nudhul It's a gigantic misconception. Euro houses can't withstand squat. Especially, the earthquakes (if they had them), or tornadoes. You'll just get a bunch of bricks left, looking like Hamburg after WW2.
