I recently got the latest and fanciest version of the movie and re-watched it after not having seen it in near 20 years. It's amazing how my friend group memes from the movie flowed naturally back into my brain. And we are gen X- so the movie was ancient news for us at the time. Other than the lingering transgressive aura it still had, Blue Velvet was probably more in the forefront of edgy and adult things to try and sneak a viewing of. That or straight porn.
In the modern era, it suffers from the over reliance on narration- and some of the back projection scenes driving in the car are especially cheesy looking- but I have to imagine they were somewhat comical even then. Aside from the UK ban of the movie entirely- there were clearly humorous bits of the movie to temper the nastiness.
The shining book isn't bad... But goddamn the movie is top tier. It's one of the ones that if i run across it randomly playing on a station, i'll probably get sucked in and watch the whole thing. 2001 is the same.
Room 237 is worth a watch for shining movie fans. It goes... way too far off the deep end- but i love that the movie can generate that interest.
