Kids just cost a fortune and the drive to nurture them is an evolutionary trick. Their purpose is solely to provide future adults to replace the older generations, a pragmatic viewpoint that usually emotionally rubs people the wrong way.
There was a time when children did contribute to society, working in factories and mines. Their small hands and keen eyesight were well suited to ore sorting by hand, and small bodies fitting in small spaces to dangerous for adults. If one died you just made another one to replace it.
That was around the time it was legal to sail a boat to Africa and bring back a hippo, but alas, modern ethics, so putting children in jobs to dangerous for adults and stealing hippos from Africa was outlawed.
