This is because you are talking to people that are 20 or under. People think they live somewhere that sucks until they go elsewhere and see the stuff that isn't on the brochure, they don't have a deep enough perspective. Until you have stayed somewhere long enough to hate it, you don't really understand it, and very young people have only experienced that with their home.
There are also a lot of serial malcontents: they will not be happy anywhere. There is no cure for this besides learning gratitude, and this is such a nice place that most people don't know real misfortune and never have to learn what misfortune means.
There are certainly places I wouldn't live if I could avoid it. There are parts of LA I would not go to if I could avoid it. Nowhere's perfect.
