Because that is what the evidence actually says happened. A lot of evidence at this point. Evidence that no one on the lableak side has had a sensible answer for.

This is a good example of why it's important to get this right.
Because it *did* happen without the researchers. And it could happen again tomorrow, because *nothing has changed*. There's still basically no biosafety in meat markets in china. Still bats with viruses that can cause epidemics. Still a dysfunctional global public health system. The problems that caused the pandemic are still operant. And every bit of effort we put into security in already pretty secure BSL-2/3/4 labs outside of tightening up to actually have labs abide by existing rules and a little more transparency is probably effort we could be using to actually solve the problem that caused the pandemic in the first place.
