-fear being 'cured'?
-Would the doc's suddenly interested in building cheap gene identifying kits be doing that for 'good' reasons? (nope)
-Cut to 150 yrs in to the future, and gene therapy available as a result of Gilead doctors experimentation, with a view to stamping out LGBT folk...

I think, on balance, it remaining folk knowledge for the time being is probably a good thing.
