You can buy monomers for cheap and build a simple thing in your garage for it. 3D printers are just the next step of thay. If you start getting more complicated, the chemistry becomes more compartmentalized and the yields are less perfect. Theoretical maximum yield is almost never achieved in a home or student lab, and sometimes hard to hit in industrial. You can't do full easybake oven chemistry until you figure out how to make the waste into something less volatile and deal with the storage problem.
